Top 10 Recommend Me A Movie!

After much deliberation, I’ve narrowed down my fictitious list of classics for the newbie to movies.

I’ve decided to keep it to easy to watch movies, all in the English language and to also exclude silent movies (boo!).  To ensure they’re all classics, all movies will be at least 30 years old.

Without further ado:

1. All About Eve (1950)
2. Blade Runner (1982)
3. Blazing Saddles (1974)
4. Cabaret (1972)
5. Jason And The Argonauts (1963)
6. Psycho (1960)
7. Star Wars (1977)
8. The Philadelphia Story (1940)
9. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
10. Tootsie (1982)

Recommend Me A Movie!

So you build up a reputation at work as a movie buff and people start asking for your opinion on all things film.

At some point, you’ll get the dreaded questions: What essential movies do I need to see?

Or worse.

Recommend me a classic?

You see, this lays upon you a burden of unforeseen depths and a huge responsibility.

Do you get all pretentious and offer a list of greatest films that you know full well won’t be enjoyed by a novice viewer or do you compile a list of movies you think they’ll enjoy and perhaps encourage them to seek out more movies?

Here’s the thing. A film like The Godfather (which I love) isn’t perhaps the best choice for someone looking to get into the classics. It is three hours long and there are many others with a shorter running time just as enjoyable.

There’s a key word for you: joy.

It should be a pleasure to watch a movie and not a task. You need find something that supposes little to no effort and is also readily available.

I’m also thinking erring on the side of caution and not mentioning movies not in the English language.

So, I think this may call for a proper list or a top 10 and this will suppose a challenge.

Part two to follow in blog post near you.

Maybe just leave that Satantango recommendation just for now…

Top 10 Fantasy Black List

A top ten of movies I’d like to see produced and on the big screen. In no particular order:

1.  Bauhaus Biopic
I’d love to see a movie focusing on the music of the post-punk, gothic era of the 80’s.
2.  Ghostbusters
Yes, I know a remake’s due out very soon. I’ve always rooted for a full on horror version. Feel free to add on elements of comedy.
3.  Lotte Reiniger Biopic
A biopic of quite possibly, my favourite animator.
4.  Love: A User’s Guide
Based on the novel by Clare Naylor. This is a harmless romantic comedy drama.
5.  The Alchemist
Based on the novel by Paulo Coelho. This should have happened this year, such a shame it’s apparantly not.
6.  The Metamorphosis
Based on the short story by Franz Kafka. This could be interesting as a motion capture performance.
7.  The Sandman
There are plenty of Sandman stories to adapt or a new one could be created. I’ll be happy either way as long as Death is in it and Neil Gaiman’s writing.
8.  The War of the Worlds
I’d love to see this on the big screen with the story, using Jeff Wayne’s concept album.
9.  The Yellow Wallpaper
Based on the short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, preferably done by a mostly female team.
10. Wicked
Starring Edina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith. Obviously.
